Life on Mars?
Mars once hosted advanced extraterrestrial civilizations until a catastrophic nuclear war wiped out every trace of life, according to a former NASA advisor.

Richard C. Hoagland and His Claims about Ancient Civilizations on Mars

Richard C. Hoagland, a former adviser to NASA, maintains that extraterrestrial civilizations once existed on Mars and on other worlds in the Solar System. Speaking on the radio program Coast to Coast AM, Hoagland asserted that there is ample photographic evidence from NASA’s Viking missions to support his position. In his view, images from the Cydonia region on Mars show organized structures, ancient settlements and pyramids. He further contends that an advanced extraterrestrial society that once flourished on the Red Planet was destroyed by the devastating force of nuclear war.

Following the 1983 Independent Mars Investigation, in which he himself took part, the researcher stated that NASA’s Viking spacecraft had detected what he termed anomalous isotopes on Mars.

These unusual isotopes, known as xenon 129, in his assessment strongly indicate nuclear detonations at the planet’s surface.

Together with plasma physicist John Brandenburg, Hoagland and a team of researchers explored the possibility that Mars was once a world teeming with life.

Hoagland said:
“John and I began discussing this as far back as 1983, when I invited him to join us because I wanted him to serve as our nuclear specialist. Some of the craters in the Cydonia region around the so called ‘Face’ and the pyramids did not strike me as natural impact craters from meteorites or asteroids.

They looked like the craters produced during nuclear test explosions in Nevada, including the Sedan event and other well known trials carried out in the American Southwest.

Their diameter to depth ratios are different, and they simply appear distinct if you have any eye for such things.

That is why John and I began this conversation, which ultimately led him to join the Independent Mars Investigation as a collaborator, and later to write several books on ancient Martian civilizations, together with the idea that the civilizations we are studying may have been destroyed in a global Martian nuclear war.”

The theory that a nuclear war once ravaged the Martian surface rests on high concentrations of the radioactive isotope xenon 129 detected on the planet.

On Earth, this radioactive isotope is typically found near nuclear reactors and in areas affected by radioactive fallout after nuclear explosions.

However, the presence of xenon 129 on Mars can also be explained by natural processes. Cosmic radiation that bombards the planet’s extremely thin atmosphere can release this isotope from the surface.

A scientific paper on the topic, published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, states:
“Xenon measurements point to the intriguing possibility that isotopes lighter than xenon 132 are enriched to varying degrees by spallation processes and by neutron capture products that have been released from the regolith into the atmosphere, and a model has been developed to explore this possibility further.”

Even so, for many NASA skeptics and conspiracy theorists such explanations are not sufficient.

Instead, researchers such as Hoagland choose to believe that the entire Solar System was once colonized and that the evidence exists and is waiting to be gathered.

They argue that a vast amount of information collected over the past fifty years of space exploration has been systematically concealed by NASA and the European Space Agency.

Hoagland stated:
“We are being prepared to confront a reality that has been hidden until now, one that NASA and other space programs have kept out of sight; a reality filled with discoveries to make, materials to bring home, technologies to reverse engineer and use to build the kind of human civilization on this planet that we all deserve.

I do not think we are more than a few months or years away from such an extraordinary shift.”

Likewise, UFO researcher and conspiracy theorist Scott C. Waring claims to have found evidence of an alien humanoid face on Mars.

Waring, who runs the blog UFO Sightings Daily, believes that NASA is concealing evidence of past and present extraterrestrial activity on the Red Planet.

Is There Life on Mars?

NASA scientists hope that one day they will uncover evidence of ancient microbial life deep beneath the Martian surface, though not evidence of developed civilizations.

Ellen Stofan, former NASA chief scientist, told a United States Senate subcommittee in August 2018 that she is convinced microbial life emerged on Mars several billion years ago.

She said:
“Life appeared on Earth very quickly after conditions stabilized. During the first few hundred million years the environment was probably hostile.

But once conditions stabilized, within roughly 100 million years, we are fairly confident that the first microbial life developed on Earth.

The challenge is that life remained in the oceans for almost a billion years, and it took more than a billion years to develop any real complexity. That is why I am optimistic that life also arose on Mars.”

Scientists added that finding such evidence will require breaking a great deal of rock, which is why people will ultimately need to travel to Mars.
