Green Tea Extract
- Category: Other Ingredients
Green tea extract is a botanical derivative obtained from the leaves of green tea (Camellia sinensis). It is rich in antioxidants, primarily catechins. The tannins in green tea also deliver antioxidant benefits.
One of green tea’s key polyphenols, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), is two hundred times more potent than vitamin E at neutralizing free radicals. Because free radicals can damage cellular DNA, the antioxidant power of green tea plays a vital role in preventing free radical damage and can therefore help prevent tumor and cancer formation. It is widely used in regenerative, anti aging products.
It is also well established that EGCG from green tea can be absorbed into the skin.
Green tea calms skin inflammation and, most importantly, it inhibits collagenase, the enzyme that breaks down collagen. Thanks to this property, topical formulations that include green tea help preserve healthy collagen levels, which keeps the skin firm and elastic.
The methylxanthines present in green tea stimulate the skin’s microcirculation, which has a positive effect on tone and overall skin health.
Green tea also provides photoprotective benefits and helps reduce the formation of erythema.
