Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus)

Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus)

A fragrant infusion of blackberry leaves can ease mild diarrhea, encourage expectoration, and is recommended for colds and influenza. Blackberry may also be helpful in managing diabetes.

Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) offers antiseptic and antifungal effects, along with constituents that strengthen the body and gently tighten tissues. Its astringency comes from abundant tannins, which help reinforce capillaries and provide antibacterial support. Blackberry leaves are used to relieve mild cases of diarrhea.

The plant is also used for vaginal discharge and is well known for promoting expectoration. A fragrant blackberry leaf tea is recommended for influenza, colds, and coughs. For external use, a blackberry leaf infusion serves as a gargle for an inflamed throat and supports the care of mouth ulcers, as well as inflammation of the oral cavity and gums.

It is also applied to ulcers and skin injuries that heal slowly. For these purposes, blackberry leaves can be combined with agrimony and carob.

A study published in the journal Planta Medica found that blackberry leaf lowers blood glucose in rabbits, not only in those with diabetes but also in healthy subjects. This action is attributed in part to its ability to stimulate the release of insulin. Blackberry fruits are rich in potassium, iron, and magnesium. They are used to prepare juice and blackberry wine, both recommended for those who struggle with iron deficiency.

Young, tender blackberry leaves are harvested in spring before the plant flowers, usually in May, then dried and crumbled for use in teas and poultices. Fresh leaves are sometimes applied externally. Roots are gathered during summer, and the fruits are picked in autumn when fully ripe. Blackberry thrives in moist, well drained soil.

Caution

There are no known adverse effects. According to some sources, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid the use of blackberry leaves.
