Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)

Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)

Thanks to its antispasmodic action, hyssop helps relieve coughs, asthma and bronchitis, as well as stomach and intestinal cramps. It is also effective against viral illnesses.

Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) has antispasmodic properties, which makes it suitable for treating coughs, asthma and bronchitis. It also calms stomach cramps, supports healthy gastric function and soothes inflammation of the stomach lining. It can be helpful for diarrhea, cramping, intestinal pain, bloating and gas. It benefits the liver and gallbladder.

Hyssop is, above all, an excellent expectorant, so it is recommended for coughs, catarrh and bronchitis. It helps with colds and flu, sore throat, hay fever and, more broadly, with viral infections of the respiratory tract. Hyssop has antiseptic, antifungal and antiviral properties. According to recent research, it may even be effective against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Hyssop can raise blood pressure and promote sweating, which may boost energy levels and help the body cope with chronic fatigue. It fortifies the nervous system and helps with nervousness, depression and tension.

For external use, an infusion of the leaves can be applied to treat bruises and muscle pain. For bruises, the oil is also used and rubbed into the affected areas. It is helpful for eczema, itchy skin and scalp, and insect stings and bites. Harvest hyssop at the start of flowering, then dry it. To grow hyssop, sow seed in spring in well drained, neutral to alkaline soil. It prefers a sunny position. It is a good companion for brassicas, as it repels cabbage white butterflies and encourages the growth of broccoli and kohlrabi. It also deters pests such as caterpillars, aphids and slugs. As with lavender, sachets of dried hyssop in a wardrobe help keep moths away.

Caution: Because hyssop raises blood pressure, it should not be taken by those with hypertension. It is not recommended for children or pregnant women.
