Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
- Category: Medicinal herbs
It boosts circulation and strengthens capillaries, sharpens concentration, eases headaches and muscle aches. Thanks to its antibacterial action, it supports the treatment of respiratory infections.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) contains flavonoids that boost circulation, fortify capillaries, and improve venous blood flow. This helps explain its time honored use to enhance memory and concentration, ease headaches, and encourage hair growth.
Rosemary calms the digestive system and is recommended for intestinal discomfort such as indigestion, stomach cramps, bloating, and constipation. Studies have shown that rosemary extract increases bile flow, which is important for digesting fats. Another study published in 1995 found that this plant acts as a diuretic and helps the liver clear toxins. Rosemary is an effective anti inflammatory agent. It has antibacterial effects and supports expectoration, so it may be used when treating infections of the bronchi, ear, nose, and throat.
The plant also serves as an effective restorative for general fatigue. For external use, dilute rosemary essential oil with a neutral carrier oil such as sunflower oil, then massage to ease muscle pain, sciatica, and rheumatic aches and inflammation. An infusion added to bathwater helps relieve rheumatism. Rosemary extract stimulates circulation in the scalp and is applied to help prevent premature hair loss. It is effective in treating dandruff. Rosemary is easy to propagate from cuttings and thrives in a warm, sheltered position in well drained sandy soil. Harvest the flowers at full bloom and pick the leaves at any time of year.
